This post is also a movie. See below. I was recently telling some friends of mine about one of the biggest highlights from this past school year. Last November, I had the opportunity to get involved with Cornerstone Conversations. Each week, there is a group of Spanish speakers who gather at my church to study the Bible in their native tongue. But before the Bible Study, there is an English conversation lesson to help them practice their English and help them connect with the church. We do language games, pronunciation drills, and have a good time. I’ve had the privilege of working with Cornerstone Conversations and it’s made me think about how this type of work has really changed my perspective on language and even the direction of my life. Growing up in the south west of the USA, I gained a general awareness of Spanish. But language learning didn’t hold any attraction for me. I speak English and it seems most people want to learn English, so why bother learning anything else?...

English Camp - Day 7

Day 7 Friday at camp is a long day. Most everyone is tired from a long week of having fun, playing hard and learning a new language. Everyone know it is the last day and there is an air of solemnity and finality about things. In class, we were a little less focused than the other days. We had our standard reading and writing. We focused on modals for our grammar portion. We gave the students cards with two words written on them. They then had to use “can” or “could” to make a sentence. Some were sort of straightforward like “a penguin and a duck” and some required more thought (“a turtle and a tree”). For our final period, we gave the students some options. They could read the last few chapters in The Horse and His Boy or chose any of the games from the week to play. It was nearly unanimous, they wanted to play Forbidden Desert again. EC 2016

English Camp was the highlight of my summer. Not only is the camp experience a lot of fun, the week is filled with moments that illustrate what a powerful God we worship and serve. On July 21 st , I woke up painfully early and made my way to the airport for the short flight to Prague. Once there, I met up with some of the other American’s on the team. We made our way to the train station and by 2:00 p.m. were on our way to Česká Třebová to meet up with the Czech Team. Thank you for your prayers concerning our travel. Everyone made it safely with our luggage (even though my luggage was severely overweight). The first two nights were spent in Česká Třebová with host families. I stayed with Jenda and Evca, dear friends I meet four years ago at English Camp and have worked with almost every year since then.
