English Camp - Day 2

Day 2
For the first few days at camp, many Americans find it really easy to wake up early. I normally wake up around 5 AM, and what with the sun coming up before 4, I was early to rise most days at camp. The second day at camp, I woke up around quarter till 5. I took a shower, got dressed and was sitting with a cup of coffee out on the balcony of the room by quarter after 5. This was pretty common for me all week, though the last few days saw a slightly later start (I slept in till 5:30 a few days!). These mornings on the balcony were beautiful times to look out at the countryside and reflect on life. I had set this time aside for prayer and Bible reading, but often found my mind wandering to events of the week and distracted by the glorious sunrise.

Most mornings, the American and Czech teams would gather for a bible study and planning for the day. Day 2 at camp was a bit different. Because it was a Sunday, we invited the students to join us for a worship service.  We heard from God’s word, sang some songs, prayed, and Mike Littell preached. It was a joyful time.

The rest of the day followed an agenda that was repeated the rest of the week. We had breakfast around 8:00 and English lessons started at 9:00. There were three hours of instruction in the morning and then lunch at 12:00. Lunch was combined with a siesta in which students could rest or do different activities together. A few students started a workout group and I think a few painted. I mostly just rested and thought about the final hour of instruction. The last class of the day started at 13:30 and went to 14:30. At 15:00 the sports time started. Each day was a little different. I’m not to sure what the sports were on Day 2. I spent the time looking over my talk and thinking through the lessons for the week. The sport activates usually ended around 17:00 and most of the students would go to the lake for a swim. Dinner started at 18:00 and announcements and talks were at 19:00. After talks, there was a time of singing playing music. This usually went from 20:30 to 21:00, then a creative activity and bedtime at 22:30.

On this day, the evening activity was “American Night.” This was an opportunity for the American team to introduce themselves to the students and give the students an opportunity to talk to different American team members. In years past, the American team had put together some sort of video, but this year we prepared three slides each and shared about our lives (family, occupation, house) and greatest fears. This was a lot of fun. We also shared a short video from Czechopalooza (see below). After our presentations, each American sat at a table with seven or eight students and talked with them for about an hour. At my table, they asked questions about my life, about my family, and even a few about my faith. It was a really fun evening and I really enjoyed the opportunity to get to know a few of the campers better.
