1 John 3:6 No one who abides in Him sins; no one who sins has seen Him or knows Him.
Does this verse scare you? It should, it scares me. It says that the person who is with God or knows Him is sinless. I want to be with God, but I know that I sin. Looking through the Bible, we see that God is perfect and pure. He does not allow sin or any form of impurity near Him. Over the past few months, I’ve taken a class to studying the first five books of the Bible. Beginning with creation, these books describe the perfect, holy God and show how He requires His followers to be pure and holy so that He can live with them. The laws are precise and strict, they seem nearly impossible to keep and we know that those who received these laws, the Hebrews, and everyone after that, has failed in some part. Israel did not keep this law and so God did not remain with them. No one can live the perfect life and no one can remain with God. This is the dark, depressing state of man. We do not see God or know Him because we are sinners.
Now, isn’t that a cheerful Christmas message? It should be, or rather, it’s the reality that makes Christmas worth celebrating. Christmas marks the turning point. As we saw yesterday, and we’ll talk about more in the days to come, man is not left in this isolated, sinful state. Christmas celebrates the fact that God made a way to save us, to take away our sin so that we may see Him, know Him, and live with Him. The humbling thing is that we cannot add to this or bring it about. We are blind in our sin and it is Christ alone who takes away the blinding sin and lives with us. Christ is the fulfillment of those Old Testament laws because He alone kept them perfectly. I’ve asked how we see Christ working in our lives and I would like us to keep reflecting on that. How is Christ living with me? Is that seen in my actions? Am I scared by my sin and do I seek comfort in Christ?
